The Political Compass
Our community covers every corner of the political compass. Here is what each quadrant represents.
Authoritarian Left
The authoritarian left combines a preference for collective economic ownership and wealth redistribution with a belief in strong state authority to achieve these goals. Historically associated with socialism and communism, this quadrant favours centralised economic planning, nationalisation of key industries, and robust government intervention in the economy. In a UK context, this can range from traditional socialist positions within Labour to Marxist and communist perspectives further to the left.
Authoritarian Right
The authoritarian right pairs support for free-market economics or traditional economic hierarchies with an emphasis on strong state power, national identity, and social order. This quadrant encompasses mainstream conservatism through to more traditionalist and nationalist viewpoints. In the UK, this can include one-nation Conservatives, Thatcherites, and those who prioritise border control, law and order, national sovereignty and traditional social values.
Libertarian Left
The libertarian left favours collective economic approaches alongside strong civil liberties and personal freedom. This quadrant is sceptical of both corporate power and authoritarian government. It includes social democrats, democratic socialists, green politics, anarcho-syndicalists and progressive movements. In UK terms, this might cover left-leaning Liberal Democrats, the Green Party, or grassroots progressive movements that emphasise equality, environmentalism and individual rights.
Libertarian Right
The libertarian right champions free-market economics and minimal government intervention in both economic and personal affairs. This quadrant values individual liberty, private property, and limited state power above all. It includes classical liberals, libertarians, and free-market advocates. In the UK context, this might cover economically liberal Conservatives, certain strands of Liberal Democrat thinking, or those aligned with think tanks advocating deregulation and free trade.
